CHARITY QUIZ.

We are holding a quiz in the Heart of Nottingham to raise money towards are challenge. All funds will be going directly to charity. This is a chance to get a large group of those who have already supported us as well as new people to get on board to find out exactly what we are doing. There will be talks from our chose charities as well as prizes for the quiz and various games on the night.

Snow matter the weather

The London contingent of Danny and Karl head out into Essex in early February.

The forecast said snow but the south east has been rather mild (or so we’re told). Many of the team members had to take a break this weekend due to the freezing temperatures but, down in London, we had to go in search of the snow.

This was, however, a great opportunity to show how hardy we are.

Besides, Danny made the most of the opportunity to get out in one of the jerseys for the coast to coast itself.

Why Manchester is NOT a winter training destination

When most cyclists go away for a winter training session they often pick Girona, Mallorca or maybe Portugal. You rarely hear of the pros choosing Manchester for their cold weather retreat, and, this weekend we learned why the hard way.

I won’t bore you with the many reasons, but instead I’ve summarised why you should pop on a plane to some exotic land, rather than choose to get a train… to the North of England… in early March:

Punctures – We had 4 of them. On one bike. On one wheel. Within 2 hours;
Wind – Constant headwinds of around 30mph for most of the day;
Rain – It rains constantly, and mainly sideways;
Hail – You do sometimes get a break from the rain, but only to get its solid cousin as a replacement; and
Temperature – It’s cold when you are cycling, but it’s nigh on Baltic when you are trying to change a tyre by the side of the road for the 4th time.

It’s turned out nice again

However, moaning aside, a contingent of us did manage to achieve a solid 95km ride around the Peak District, conquering many 20% inclines on the way (see picture below for proof) and racking up nearly 1500m of elevation gain! It’s just a shame that it took us 5 hours longer than expected and resulted in us having to jump a train on the way back to avoid having to cycle in the dark with minimal lights!

A big shout out goes to James Hyman who put us up over the weekend and provided a delightful veggie friendly feast for us all and Jim “the knee” Fayle for providing us with some much needed laughter by wearing a northern flat cap for a helmet (he’s in the yellow below).

Training begins in the cold, wet month of January

As we have been known to do, the journey to Leamington was meant to result in an away match for Stockport County. Unfortunately, they reached the FA Trophy fourth round, meaning the match against Leamington Spa was cancelled.

Nonetheless we cycled to Leamington and en route we encountered the usual hazards associated with cycling:
